A lot of tenants, particular newbies, don’t think about insurance. Either they don’t think about it or they assume that their landlord’s or the owner’s insurance covers their belongings.
But it doesn’t! Homeowner’s insurance provides protection for the structure that you’re living in and liability coverage for the owner. If there’s a fire and your furniture is destroyed, you have no coverage. If someone breaks in and swipes your laptop and flat-screen TV, you’re out of luck.
Fortunately, renter’s or tenant’s insurance is easily available and inexpensive. It is simple coverage based on the value of your belongings. You can contact an Independent insurance agent to get a quote. Often a parent has a relationship with an insurance agent, or it is available from the property and casualty agent from whom you purchase your car insurance.
If you’re in Charleston, South Carolina, you can always contact me for a referral to such an agent.
My leases specifically recommend renter’s insurance. Everyone who rents should purchase this inexpensive coverage - it’s the old “an ounce of prevention” adage.
As always, please let me know how I can be of service.
